Solid Start for Aussie Teams on Day 1

Australia were involved in 7 fixtures across the 4 divisions on day 1 and they can be proud in walking away with 6 wins and a draw.

Open Men’s

The Men’s team made a perfect start on a tough first day where they won 3 from 3, beating the finalists from the 2011 World Cup South Africa and the hosts New Zealand. They won all 3 games relatively comfortably winning 8 skins in the process. The Queensland trio of Teske, Fitzgerald and Dearness played all 3 games with Captain Lyle Teske averaging 15.67 of the bat and was even more impressive with the ball taking 5 wickets in his 6 overs at a miserly economy rate of 5.33 runs per game.

The Men’s side have only 2 games on day 2 taking on India and Singapore and only one game tomorrow where they take on England.

Open Ladies

The ladies only had one game on the opening day and they looked solid in a 136 (3) – 108(1) victory over New Zealand. The Aussies bowled first and Captain Jude Coleman and Nicole Martin picked up 2 wickets each as they restricted New Zealand to 108, but the ladies really shone with the bat with all batting pairs scoring 30 or more to win 3 skins. Everyone chipped in but Dulane Carson top scored with 23.

Today they face England and Wales and then the taken the so far unbeaten South Africans on Tuesday.

Under 20 Men’s

2 from 2 for the U20’s who dispatched South African and New Zealand with relative ease. Ryan Dowse performed well with bat and ball in both games scoring 37 and taking a massive 7 wickets.  Jamie Diener was the star with bat scoring 29 against New Zealand at a strike rate of 161.11 and another 15 against South Africa at 115.38.

The Aussie Under 20 Ladies came oh so close in there game against New Zealand, they had won the first 3 skins in their chase of 123. They needed 14 from the final pair, but 5 wickets were a major setback and New Zealand managed to restrict the final pair to 13 to end the match as a draw.
